Overview: Dexter Morgan seems to be a regular guy who works as a blood spatter specialist in Miami Metro. Yet, he has "a dark passenger" - the urge to kill. With the assistance of his father, he was able to channel this urge at the noble cause - killing only bad guys who were able to avoid justice.
Review: Throughout 8 seasons the viewer sees a lot of blood and many murders. Nevertheless, everyone justifies Dexter's actions. Why? There are could be a few reasons. First of all, he lives by "the code" meaning that he only kills people who are detrimental to society - serial killers, rapers and other criminals. People like to see justice served even when it involves another act of violence. However, we live in the world full of rules and laws. This leads me to my second point - people love Dexter because he can break the rules of society. We cannot simply punch someone in their face when they cut the line or take up the last parking spot at the mall. Yet Dexter lives by his "code" and he can punish the bad guys for their wrongdoings. Deep down, close to our Neanderthal self, the viewer relates to Dexter's actions and wishes to come back for a minute to the wilderness with no legal system but with strong presence of instincts, power, dominance and violence.
