Review: "The Shining" is the horror movie from the eighties that is famous for being on the list of the scariest movies of all times. In this particular scene Johnny, who is a psycho and a murderer, is trying to kill a mother and her son as they are trying to hide from him in the bathroom.
Overview: From the very beginning, we see a man who is walking down a hallway. He is casually dressed, his hair is disheveled and his smile hints on his madness (0:00-0:06). In addition, the ax in his hand and wondering gaze point at his intention to kill someone violently. We see him limping as he walks down the rooms (0:17). His character was created to show him as an outcast, as a creep who is mad and who is capable of murder.
When he approaches the bathroom and realizes that his victim is locked inside, he grins (0:35). The camera shows his unshaven cheeks and his mad gaze from the side. He understands that his victim has no place to go which gives him power and turns him from the outsider into the person who controls the situation. He plays with the victim by playfully and gently knocking at the door (0:37). His tongue is out and his mouth is open as if he is an animal who is about to consume its meal. This adds another level of creepiness to the situation because not only he is about to commit an act of murder but he also enjoys the moment preceding the actual murder. Knowing that the victim is trapped, he chooses to play with it to enjoy the process.
We don't know the biography of the murderer, but the viewer can tell by his looks that he is as outcast, just like men and boys at the bar could tell by how Lester Ballard looked that he wasn't worth even saying hi. Both of them are unwanted elements of the society: weird, creepy and breaking the rules of conduct of any society by committing murders.
