Going home in a crowded subway car, I raised my eyes from the book to see if it was finally my stop when the poster on the wall draw my attention. First of all, the background was bloody red, making it hard not to notice the picture. I felt as if someone just splashed the red paint in my eyes. In a few moments my eyes accepted the dominance of red and started moving to the center piece of the ad. There I saw a woman. Her figure stood out from the background since the grey scale was used to portray her figure. What is more, her body dominated the space because she was standing in a dominant position with the arms on her waist. Her grey eyes were looking indulgently and a little bit irritably at the viewer. Her attitude was a signal that she was a pro. After that I finally noticed the title, "How to Get Away with Murder?" My mind was racing. Is it a new tutorial for beginner murders? Is it a joke? Then I realized that this was a TV show. When I got home, I read the plot. The new TV show was about a law professor who taught criminal law and eventually became involved in the real murder alongside her four best students.
The creators of the ad were tremendously successful in transmitting the presence of violence on the show. First of all, the red color that is traditionally associated with blood was the dominant color that screamed violence. Secondly, the main character's body dominated the forefront, yet it was made distant due to her depiction in black and white palette. Even though her figure has gray and the background was bright red, I saw the connection between the intense color and the ghost-like appearance of the woman. I felt as if she just emerged from this pool of blood absolutely intact. In addition, her posture exhibited dominance and expertise. Not surprisingly, she seems to be an expert in killing and getting away with the consequences. At last, the creators of the ad used an interesting technique in representing the title of the show. "How to get away with" is written in a simple plain shrift, however, "Murder" is much larger that the rest of the words and here they change the shift for a wacky and disoriented one using the larger font. Overall, this poster was successful in representing the violence in the show and made the viewer wonder whether there was a real tutorial on how to get away with MURDER.
