Overview: In this scene the main character, Travis, goes on a rampage and shoots the pimp, the corrupted hotel clerk and the prostitute's client.
Review: The idea of the TV show protagonist being a good guy who kills bad guys is as old as the world. Dexter show is built around this idea. Therefore, I decided to look back to find out how murder of people that are detrimental to society was portrayed in 1976 in "Taxi Driver".
The protagonist changes his look right before going on the killing spree. He shaves his head leaving mohawk only. He is dressed in all black with a tiny white collarthat separates his face from the rest of the body. This was a predetermined move from the directing crew which allowed to show the character as a determined saboteur.
The first victim is the pimp (0:40-1:30). The plot develops so fast that the viewer doesn't have much time to comprehend what went wrong. In the beginning, it looks like a regular talk on the street. The camera is located in a way as if picking from the neighboring house bushes, bringing the viewer to the center of events. We see the main character going away and turning around a few times only to cast an indifferent look at his first victim. From that heartless move, we realize that he won't stop.
Indeed, his next victim, the hotel clerk, has his arm blown into pieces at 02:00. The special effects of the 70th allowed for blurring the clerk' hand and leaving only part of it visible. This video effects create the illusion of violence showing the disfigured body part.
More violence follows as the pimp makes his come back and shoots the main character in the neck (2:06). Now we see blood all over the place and all over the characters. I find it particularly interesting how the travel of the gun shot sound was transmitted by showing various part of the building, doors and hallways, where the action takes place (2:01-2:03).
